When you watch your favorite movies, you might not think about science. Of course, there’s a lot of science behind movies like Interstellar or The Martian but not movies like Frozen or The Avengers, right? Think again.
Animated (動畫的) movies use a lot of science and math to make things look as real as possible. For example, snow was used in many parts of the movie Frozen, but making the snow look real was a challenge. The snow needed to act differently in different situations, like if it was melting (融化) or blowing (吹) in the wind.
Mathematicians (數學家) had to create a computer program to make the snow look more natural. Joseph Teran, a mathematician at the University of California, US, faced this challenge with Frozen, according to the Society for Science and the Public.
He and his team used math equations (等式) to treat snow like many different pieces instead of one large thing, as movies had done in the past. They worked for months to make a computer program do this.
Science is important for superhero movies too. Superheroes are supposed to have special powers that can’t always be explained. But moviemakers still want to make their actions realistic.
For example, Raychelle Burks, a chemistry professor (化學教授) from the American Chemical Society, told the Daily Mail that some of the science behind The Avengers could be real. Iron Man’s suit (服裝) is possible because it can be made of a light but strong material. In the movie, Tony Stark also makes new elements by making atoms collide (使原子對撞), much like scientists do in real life.
So next time you see a movie, don’t forget to think about the science behind it.

What is your impression (印象) of Denmark? Many of you may know it as a country of fairy tales (童話) because it is the home place of Heinz Christian Andersen. But now Denmark has a new title: the happiest country in the world, according to the 2016 World Happiness Report.
The report chose countries considering the following six factors (因素): GDP per capita (人均生產總值), healthy life expectancy (平均壽命), low government corruption (腐化), a sense of social support, freedom to make life choices and a culture of generosity (慷慨).
Denmark is neither the richest nor the biggest country.u So why do the 5.7 million people of Denmark smile so much?
“We have no worries. And if we do worry, it’s about the weather. Will it rain today, remain grey or get cold?” Knud Christensen, a 39-year-old social worker from Copenhagen, explained to the Independent.
Denmark has a series of policies (政策) that benefit its people. For example, the country supports parents if they want to be with their children, especially newborn babies. Danish families receive a total of 52 weeks of parental leave (育嬰假). While American women only have an average of 10.3 weeks.
Besides, women in Denmark don’t need to worry about whether they are treated unfairly by their male colleagues (男同事). In Denmark, gender equality (性別平等) is the priority (優先). In 1915, the country gave women the right to vote (選舉). You also see women in the political world. The country now has its first female prime minister (總理), Helle Thorning-Schmidt.
The Nordic country is also famous for its biking culture. In Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, bikes are used for about 50 percent of its people’s trips to school or work. Biking is not only good for reducing environment pollution, but it’s also good for people’s health. Just 30 minutes of biking a day adds an average of one to two years to a person’s life expectancy, The Huffington Post reported.

A. their people’s looks

D. Danish people don’t worry much.
3. In Denmark, _____.
A. women don’t like to work
B. people enjoy some good policies
