Basketball

James Naismith was a Canadian. He invented basketball in 1891. At that time, he was a P. E. teacher at Springfield College , in the U.S.A He invented an indoor game for his students so that they could play it even in bad weather.

Do you know how to score points in the game? Well, just put the ball into the other side’s basket. You can throw the ball into the basket from any part of the court . And you can throw it with one hand or both hands. But you must follow the rules.

Now, over a century later, more and more people play basketball. In the U.S.A., the NBA is very popular. People from all over the world like to watch and play basketball. They love this game.

2. 句子

1) Michael, could you please do me a favor? 邁克爾，請你幫我個忙好嗎?

could 在此句中不表示過去時態，而是表示委婉請求對方做某事。在這裏要用 could 而不用 can ，因為 could 的語氣要比 can 委婉得多。 Could you please…? 是一種請求幫助的慣用法。

Do sb. a favor 是非常正式的請求，意思是 help sb. 和 give sb. a hand ，類似的請求還有： Could / Would you … ? Will you (please) … ? 如：

Please do me a favor and carry this box. 請幫我搬一下這個箱子。

2) But one of my teammates fell ill. 但是我的一個隊友病了。

fell 是 fall 的過去式， fall ill 病倒了。如：

He fell ill and died soon after. 他病倒了不久便去世了。

teammate 指隊友，而 team player 指通力合作者，有團隊精神的人。

3 ) Would you mind teaching me? 請你教我，好嗎?

Would you mind (sb.) doing sth.? 是一個常用固定句型，表示“請你……好嗎?倘若……你介意嗎?” 如：

Would you mind giving me a hand? 介意幫我個忙嗎?

Would you mind my / me smoking here? 你介意我在這兒吸煙嗎?

4 ) He invented an indoor game for his students so that they could play it even in bad weather. 他為他的學生們發明了一種室內遊戲，以便他們即使在惡劣的天氣裏也能玩。

invent 發明 如：

Who invented the telephone? 誰發明了電話?

indoor 室內的，其反義詞為 outdoor 。

so that 引導目的狀語從句，譯為“以便，為了”。 如：

That teacher speaks louder so that everyone can hear him. 為了讓大家都聽得見，老師提高了嗓門。

5) … more and more people play basketball. ……越來越多的人打籃球。

形容詞比較級 +and+ 形容詞比較級或“ more and more + 多音節形容詞原級”，表示“越來越……”。如：

The weather gets warmer and warmer. 天氣變得越來越暖和了。
