世界大學生運動會是國際大學生體育聯合會主辦的世界性綜合運動會，它由三大賽事組成，即“世界大學生夏季運動會”、“世界大學生冬季運動會”和“世界大學生體育錦標賽”。上世紀20年代初，當時的國際大學生組織就已開始計劃舉辦世界大學生運動會。1923年5月，在巴黎召開了世界大學生體育代表大會，會議決定次年舉行第一屆國際大學生運動會。1924年，首屆國際大學生運動會(International Universities' Games)在華沙舉行，設田徑、游泳和擊劍3個比賽項目。此後，運動會不定期舉辦，至1939年共舉辦了8屆。後因第二次世界大戰運動會被-迫中斷，1947年恢復舉行。但從1951年起因國際形勢的變化，分-裂成東西方兩個運動會，西方的名為"國際學生體育運動會"，東方的叫"青年學生運動會" 或"青年友好運動會"。兩個陣營各自組織和舉辦自己的大學生運動會。

After 46 years later, the Universiade first came to Turkey, which is located between Asia and Europe and combines with the Eastern and Western culture. Attracted by the theme of the cultural show “Anatolia, the land where the sun rises” in the opening ceremony, about 10,000 university athletes from 147 countries will compete in 15 fields of sports from August 12 to August 21.

FISU (國際大學生體育運動聯合會，簡稱國際大體聯) stands for Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (International University Sports Federation) and was founded in 1949. Its main responsibility is the supervision of both Summer and Winter Universiades as well as the World University Championships.

The word “Universiade” (世界大學生運動會，簡稱大運會) comes from “university” and “Olympiad”, and means Olympic games for students. The first Summer Universiade was held in Turin, Italy and Beijing held the 21st Universiade in 2001.
