名詞作定語用單複數的規則

　　1. 原則上説，一個名詞用於另一個名詞前作定語時，習慣上要用單數，不用複數。如：

stone bridge 石橋(不能説 stones bridge)

morning exercise 早操(不能説 mornings exercise)

story book 故事書(不能説 stories book)

coffee cup 咖啡杯(不能説 coffees cup)

baby girl 女嬰(不能説 babies girl)

school gate 校門(不能説schools gate)

eye drops眼藥水(不能説eyes drops)

test paper考卷(不能説tests paper)

book report讀書報告(不能説books report)

train station火車站(不能説trains station)

plane ticket機票(不能説planes tickets)

pocket money零花錢(不能説pockets money)

generation gap代溝(不能説generations gap)

　　2. 在某些特殊情況下，一個名詞用於另一個名詞前作定語有時也用複數，主要見於以下幾種情形：

(1) 有些只有複數形式的名詞，則用複數作定語。如：

goods train 貨車(若説good train，則會誤解為“好的火車”)

clothes shop 服裝店(若説cloth shop，則會誤解為“布料店”)

an arts degree文科學位(習慣上不説an art degree)

(2) 有些習慣上要用複數的名詞，當它用作定語，也習慣上要用複數。如：

a savings account 儲蓄帳户(savings表示“存款”時只用複數形式)

contents insurance 家庭財產保險(contents表示“所容納之物”時只用複數形式)

(3) 有時使用複數名詞作定語，可能與語義有關。如：

the foreign languages department 外語系(languages用複數，指多種語言)

the United States government 美國政府(states用複數，指美國由多個州組成)

　　3. 當man和woman用於名詞前作定語，表示性別時，若被修飾的名詞為複數，則man和woman也要用複數。如：

men nurses (doctors, singers) 男護士(醫生、歌唱家)

　　4. 有些複數名詞作定語可視為複數名詞所有格作定語的省略形式。如：

a teachers college 師範學院(teachers等於teachers’)

eight hours sleep 八個小時睡眠(hours等於hours’)

a three weeks training 三週訓練(weeks等於weeks’)

注：eight hours sleep 之類的.説法，既可表達為eight hours’ sleep，也可表達為 an eight-hour sleep。類似的如：
