The passage argues the large bird named Argentis which has been extinct is unable to fly. However, the lecturer in the listening part holds a very different opinion. He claims that the bird has the ability to fly actually.

First, the writer thinks its wingspan was too long for it to lift off. The lecturer refutes it by saying that the bird could adopt a method named running start by running down a hill and take off.

Second, about the point that the bird’s muscle was so weak that it is impossible for it to fly continuously, the lecturer insists that it could keep flying without flapping its wings. Instead, it could take advantage of the thermal gas in the air. Actually, this phenomenon can be seen among many existing huge birds.

Last but not the least, according to the writer, there was no need for the bird to fly because it lacked predators. The lecturer claims that it had to fly in that it was fed on dead animals which were not that easy to find unless it cover large areas. Therefore, flying was crucial to its survival. (189 words)

The question of “what is the best way to teach young people” has never failed to attract public attention, as well as the concerns from educators, parents and school administrators. I personally believe that working in small groups is the best way to teach young children for the following reasons.

To begin with, working in small groups can improve their communication ability. Currently, it is common that each family have no more than two children. What makes it worse is that families in the same district or even in the same building do not know each other, which indicates that young children have little access to their peers. It is especially true in China where I live. As a result, they tend to develop some negative personalities when they are isolated from others. For example, some kids who lack friends would become selfish and refuse to share anything with others when he grew up while some others might have problems in getting along well with coworkers or any other partner. Fortunately, schools would be a fantastic solution. They actually provide a communication platform for children when asking them to work in small groups. During the process of performing group tasks, children have to express their own ideas and try to understand others’, which will have a life-long influence on them. To tell the truth, that is what most parents nowadays send their children to kindergartens for.

On top of that, young children are really too young to work alone. They might fail to achieve some goals or complete tasks assigned to them, which will make them frustrated and discourage them from trying new things. However, things will be different if they are asked to work with partners. They can combine their strength and wisdom together to accomplish assigned tasks and it is more likely for them to live up to teachers’ requirements. Thus, young children would definitely get a sense of achievement, which will motivate them to go further.

To conclude, I believe young children should be asked to work in small groups instead of working alone. It is what parents expect from schools and also beneficial for young children in the long run. (364 words)
