我們的記者Geoff Howard正在悉尼找一家音樂用品商店， 這家商店設在一條叫Angel Place的小巷裏。以下是Geoff向三位過路人問路。這段話在廣播裏分三部分播放。

GEOFF: Excuse me.

3RD PERSON: Mmmm?

GEOFF: Can you tell me how to get to Angel Place?

3RD PERSON: Angel Place? I'm not sure... no, sorry.

GEOFF: O.K. Thanks.

GEOFF: Excuse me. I'm looking for Angel Place. Can you help me?

4TH PERSON: Yes.I can. Let me see…Yes. It's off George Street.

GEOFF: And where's George Street?

4TH PERSON: Oh, you're new to Sydney, then?

GEOFF: Yes. I'm from Albury.

4TH PERSON: Well, it's the first on the right. And Angel Place is in the second block, next tothe bank.

GEOFF: I'm with you. Thanks.

4TH PERSON: That's O.K.

It's off George Street 在George街附近(是George街的一條小巷、岔路等)

It's the next street on the right/left 右/左首第一條馬路

in the second block 過一條橫馬路;在馬路那邊(block是指兩條平行街道之間馬路一側的建築羣，中文裏沒有相應的詞。)

next to the bank 銀行旁邊

You're new to Sydney, then 那你準是第一次來悉尼吧。(then表示説話人得出了一個結論。)

FINDING THE WAY 問路

向人問路和回答別人問路有好幾種比較普通的説法：

(Excuse me) Can you telt me where Angel Place is?

Sorry, I'm afraid I don't. know.

Do you know where Angel Place is?

Sorry I don't.

Can you tell me how to get to Angel Place?

I'm not sure…no, sorry(I can't).

I'm looking for Angel Place. Can you help me?

Yes,I can. It's off George Street.

And where's George Street?

It's the first (street) on the right.

注意：

在問別人問題之前，也許需要説句話引起對方注意。可以説Excuse me，但不説Sorry。Sorry這個詞用於道歉。不用來向人招呼。

注意下列各組兩個問句不同的語序：

Where is Angel Place? (Where's Angel Place?)

Can you tell me where Angel Place is?

Where is she?

Can you tell me where she is?

Why are they laughing?

Do you know why they are laughing?

注意下列兩個問句不同的語序和用詞：

Where does he work?

Do you know where he works?

向人問路不能…開始就問 (And)

Where's George Street?這類問題。這樣問顯得突然，甚至粗魯，通常要在前面加個套語Can you tell me等。

答句It's the first (street) on the right中，street可以省略，因為前面的問句裏已經提到這個詞了。

CONVERSATIONAL DEVICE

a) Let me see 讓我想想。

在回答別人的.問題以前説這句話是想留出一點時間來考慮一下。

b) I'm with you 我知道了;我聽着呢;我聽清楚了。

ARONUNCIATION CORNER

a) Can只是在簡短的回‘答裏重讀，即讀作[kæn]，單獨念時也可重讀。此外不需重讀，讀[kən]即可。例如：

I can help you[ai kən 'helpju:]

Yes,I can['jes ai 'kæn]

b)下面問句中有兩點值得注意：

Can you tell me how to get to Angel Place?

(i)問句的節奏，以重音符號標明。請練習一下。一邊讀，一邊打拍子。

(ii) To的不同發音：[tə]和[tu:]後面的詞以元音開始，to讀作[tu:]同時再加一個[w]連接音。練習下面的詞組，注意[w]這個連接音。

to Angel Place

To後面的詞以輔音開始，to讀作[tə]，

例如：to get[tə get]
