Behind every great achievement in anyone's life lies perseverance. We see this in every human endeavour. Outstanding sportsmen spend all their time practising. Their endurance is beyond imagination. The same is true of businessmen who build up for tunes. What we usually see are their achievements, but once we go behind the scenes we will find that they have put in a lot of continual steady efforts. We all have read of great musicians, writers and inventors who have created or discovered breakthroughs in human achievement. Invariably they have said that they owe all their success to perseverance. As to college students, quite a big number of them have become successful language learners through perseverance, however, a certain group of them just stop half way and their previous efforts turn out to be fruitless.

Of all the countless examples the saga of Colonel Saunders is perhaps one of the most outstanding. The 65-year-old man from Kentucky had a dream to start a chain of fried chicken restaurants all over the world. To realize his dream, he knew that he needed a restaurant owner to go into partnership with him to open the first restaurant and to fry chicken according to the secret recipe he had. Colonel Saunders had knocked on 1008 doors before he finally found his partner. It is doubtful whether many of us would have had the perseverance to knock even a hundred doors.

From the above discussion we can draw a conclusion that success comes to anyone who keeps working perseveringly and lack of perseverance can only result in frustration and failure.

Obesity is a subject of concern that is getting as big as peoples waste-lines. It affects many people on a daily basis, and also affects the way people interact with others. It is an unhealthy trend with a rapid growth rate, quickly consuming many lives. The problem must be fixed for a more happy and healthy life. In order to fix it, the issue of obesity must first be understood, and then controlled at the state it's at, and finally it must be prevented from continually occurring.

One of the major steps to fixing a problem is to first fully understand it. Obesity is simply an excess in body fat. It is very unhealthy and can cause a numerous number of diseases, and heart problems. It is caused by a number of things, ranging from pre-destined genes, the environment a person lives in, and also the kind of behavior that is attributed to eating habits. Scientists are working on developing gene models to identify the genes that tend to cause people to store fat, and they hope to be able to treat these genes to prevent the problem from occurring. A healthy environment is more likely to yield healthy tendencies; it promotes good eating and physical activity. People's behavior also affects obesity. Be positive and practice weight control, and don't binge when feeling depressed.

After obesity is understood, it must then be controlled and maintained at the level it's at. According to The American Obesity Association, a startling 33% of Americans are obese, and there are over 300,000 deaths as a result of obesity each year. So what is the best way to control this problem? Exercise and proper dieting will do the trick. None of those crazy diet pills and easy-to-lose programs will actually help to maintain healthy weight loss. People must consume a reasonable amount of calories each day, and exercise is the key to a more healthy body.

The schematic diagram mainly consists of three parts. From 1950 to 1966, the curve was roughly a straight line slightly above zero, showing that China was a poorly-educated nation then. In 1966, the curve drastically dropped below zero, moving down hopelessly in the next 11 years. This periodcoincided with the "Culture Revolution". Our society went mad then, books were burned,schools were closed and all kinds of academic activities were banned. Knowledge inflicted its masters nothing but disasters. Life was a nightmare for Chinese intellectuals, including famous scholars as well as common people who received higher education or whose profession had anything to do with knowledge. It was a time when ignorance was a virtue and knowledge was a crime. People tried desperately to be away from knowledge. As a result, China lagged farther behind the rapid progressing world. This was the darkest time in the history of New China. The curve returned to its original non-zero position around 1978 and moved up but slowly. From 1984 on, it has been shooting up. The open-up policy encourages people to study and to channel their knowledge to the market economy. Millions of Chinese are bettering off by means of their knowledge and more Chinese enjoy the fruits of knowledge and say goodbye for good to poverty that haunted them for generations.

As our world is rapidly advancing towards the Information Age, increasing number of people realize that knowledge is power and creativity is everything. Only when China becomes a better educated nation, can China be a great nation with international prestige.
