　　一、指人的用法

that用於指人，在定語從句中可用作主語、賓語或表語。如：

A driver that has knocked someone down must stop. 撞人的司機必須停車。(關係代詞that指driver，在從句中作主語)

He is the man that you have been looking for. 他就是你要找的.那個人。(關係代詞that指man，在從句中作賓語)

He is not that man that he was. 他已不是過去的他了。(關係代詞that指man，在從句中作表語)

that用於指物，在定語從句中可用作主語、賓語或表語。如：

This is the plane that will fly to Tokyo in the afternoon. 這是下午要飛往東京的那架飛機。(關係代詞that指plane，在定語從句中作主語)

She was annoyed by something that I had said. 她為我説的某句話而不高興。(關係代詞that指something，在定語從句中作賓語)

who和whom均只用於指人，不用於指事或物，其中who在定語從句中用作主語，whom在定語從句中用作賓語。如：

I met a girl who knew your sister. 我碰到一個認識你姐姐的姑娘。

In Berlin, he first met the woman whom he would one day marry. 在柏林，他第一次遇見那個女人，後來他終於跟她結了婚。

但是，用作賓語的whom如果不是緊跟在介詞之後，通常會被省略或用who, that代之。如：
