在英語中表示“這(這)，那(些)”的'代詞叫指示代詞，它們主要包括this, these, that, those 四個。見下表：

(1) 若回指上文提到的事情，可用that或this，但要指下文敍述的事情時，則通常只用 this。如：

He married one of his students, and this [that] was known to us all. 他娶了他的一個學生，這是大家眾所周知的事。

Listen to this: the man is not a professor but a cheat. 大家聽着：這個人不是教授，是騙子。

【説明】在打電話時，通常用 this 指自己，用that指對方。

(2) that和those後可接定語從句，其通常結構為 that which (=what), those who (=the people who)。如：

That which is beautiful is not always true. 美的東西未必真實。

Those who break the law should be punished. 違法者應該受到懲罰。

【説明】this和 these兩個指示代詞習慣上不接定語從句。

(3) this和that 可作程度副詞，相當於so，用來修飾形容詞或副詞。如：
