第一點，考生常常使用過於晦澀的單詞，而又不理解其確切意思。很多考生在背單詞的時候，認識到一些以前不瞭解的高端新託福寫作詞彙。但是這些高端詞彙的用法常常十分的侷限，只能用於某一特定的情況下。但是考生常常為了故意顯示他的詞彙量，寬泛和隨意地使用高端詞彙。這種做法反而會使得考官不能理解句意，感到莫名其妙。其實，一些簡單有力的詞彙在不同的短語中也是有不同的意思的。與其去尋找難詞怪詞，不如講自己詞彙量內的詞語鑽研透，靈活使用。

第二點，考生偏向於使用句式複雜的長句。英文寫作中的長句常常可以體現文采和寫作者對於語言的駕馭水平。對於託福寫作考生而言，只要可以使用被動和主動之間的切換即可，並不需要刻意地去將各種句式句型嵌套到文章中。文章本天成，妙手偶得之。生搬硬套從來就不可能得到閲卷人的賞識，還會耽誤考生的時間，不利於文章思路的'連貫。有效而精準地表達觀點是最重要的，句型只是為之服務的工具，達到這個目的的手段而已。考生切勿本末倒置。

第三點，考生一味迷信於所謂的經典範文。中國的托福考生何其之多，一篇範文萬人抄並非不可能出現。考生希望學習範文，託福寫作輔導提到借鑑範文是可以理解的，但是在考場上刻意去回憶某一篇範文作為自己的答案是不可取的。一方面，範文也只是應試之作，不是什麼值得銘記的文學佳作。

學不高明的老師是沒有必要的，反而限制了自己的思路。另一方面，托福考官有豐富的閲卷經歷。一旦讓其發現抄襲的痕跡，或是讓他感到千篇一律，分數自然不高。即使寫作需要模板，也應當是考生平時通過練習自己總結的獨一無二的模板。
