　　第一部分對話：談論天氣

在這一講裏，你將聽到幾段短小的對話。聽的時候，請集中精力聽，儘可能不看下面的材料。

有人在公共汽車站上向一位陌生人打聽情況。

MAN：Ah…excuse me，…can you tell me when thenext bus is due, please?

WOMAN: Ah, it's due in 5 minutes.

(這句話用來引起別人的注意，例如在這一講裏就是這樣用的。在人多的地方請人騰出位子或讓路也可以説這句話。)

It might rain later 可能要下雨

It's a bit chilly 天氣有點涼

It's getting late 時間不早了

It's warmer than (yesterday/last week,etc.) 今天比(昨天/上星期等等)暖和

See you later 再見

There area few clouds about 天上有點雲彩

What do you do for a living? 你是幹什麼工作的?(for a living本來是謀生的意思。)

ah 發這個聲音有時侯表示講話前的猶豫。

mm 這個聲音表示“讓我想想”的意思。

　　1. ASKING STRANGERS FOR INFORMATION 向陌生人打聽情況

向陌生人打聽情況可以用好幾種客套話，最普通的是：

引起 + 表示請求+ 要打聽

對方注意 + 的套話+ 的情況

Excuse me + can you + when...

Excuse me + can you + what...

Excuse me + can you + how... etc,

EXAMPLES

Excuse me, can you tell me.

when the next bus is due?

Excuse me, can you tell me

which bus goes to the school? .

Excuse me, can you tell me

what the time is?

請注意上面例句裏的語序。在“表示請求的套語”部分用疑問句語序，在“要打聽的情況”部分用陳述句語序。

　　NG SMALL TALK 閒談

有時候我們感到有必要和別人應酬幾句，例如在公共汽車站上向一位陌生人打聽了什麼情況之後，或者在坐公共汽車、火車去上班的途中偶爾認識了二個人之後，按理都要説幾句話。這一類的閉談英語叫small talk.話題往往是“中性”的，就是説無關緊要的，而且很少牽涉到個人。最普通的一個話題是天氣。在這種談話裏，常用反意疑問句(question tags)，要求對方作出反應，使談話不致中斷。

EXAMPLES

A: Hot (day/morning etc.), isn't it?

B: Yes, it is./Yes, it is isn't it?/Yes, isn't it?

A: It was cold (last night yesterday), wasn't it?

B: Yes it was./Yes, it was, wasn't it?/Yes wasn't it?

3. GETTING TO KNOW A PERSON BETTER 進一步瞭解對方的情況

瞭解對方的工作情況，可以這樣問：

What do you do for a living?

Where do you work?

Do you like your job?

4. BRINGING A CONVERSATION TO AN END 結束談話

在説goad-bye之前，有不少的詞句可以用來引導，例如：

I'd better go/I have to go (now)/ It's getting late/I must fly.

PRONUNCIATION CORNER

這一講裏有三個語音問題，請你在聽廣播時注意：

a)下列各詞語第一個音節需重讀：

manager elephant yesterday isn't it

b) 一個詞最後一個輔音和下一個詞開頭的元音連讀，例如：

It's a nice 't it?

c) 一個詞最後一個元音和下一個詞開頭的元音連讀，例如： ’

It's a nice day,isn't it?

連讀過程中有一個微弱的[j]音把兩者連接起來。
