在舊GRE中，不僅常見的GRE詞彙能考到18000左右，而且充斥着大量日常生活中難以見到的生僻詞彙，相對的，改革之後GRE詞彙要求降低，但是仍然不容小覷。

GRE詞彙是一個寬泛的概念;也可以説不認識的、有用詞彙都是GRE詞彙;但是GRE詞彙也不是無限多，除了過於偏的'專業詞彙，再除去衍生詞彙，綜合歷年的考試真題來算，GRE的核心詞彙應該在10000出頭;也就是説，一個已經掌握5000詞彙的考生需要再增加5000以上單詞才能夠應付GRE考試。

3. 不常考的另外那1000個單詞，其中大約有600個不難，但就是不常考。大約有400個左右確實非常晦澀難懂。如果你的目標是165+，那這1000個必須要掌握。對於這1000個單詞，“再要你命3000”的選詞範圍又太小了，是無論如何也覆蓋不了的。“紅寶書”的選詞範圍可能足夠，但是你知道背紅寶書是多麼的痛苦。

4. 對於每次考試中出現的新詞，或者説近期考試中出現的新詞，那是任何一本書籍都無法覆蓋的。這隻能靠不斷累積來解決。
