實用英文口語

很多國家的語言都有大批圍繞“心”而形成的俗語。漢語中有關“心”的成語和習語數不勝數,英語也不例外。下面是一些常用的短語:

釋義:

fall的意思是“落下”,在改習語中轉移為“跌倒,摔倒”,副詞flat有“平”的意思。從字面上看,改習語有“平平地摔下”的意思,引申為漢語中説的“摔得結結實實”,並進而轉義為“落得無趣”。它主要用來指某人的故事,笑話或表演沒有得到預期的效果。

範例:

If they won'tcooperate, our plan will fall flat.

如果他們不肯合作我們的計劃就會落空。

Yes, it's really embarrassing when your ideas fall flat.

對呀,沒人理會你的主意時真糗。

實用口語:英語裏“複習”就是“刷乾淨”?

brushup:複習,温習

解詞釋義:

brush是動詞,意思是“把......刷乾淨”。Brushup本義是“打扮整潔”,引申為“重新學習過去的技能”,即“温習,複習”。

支持範例:

If you're going to Mexico, you shouldbrushup on your Spanish.

如果你要去墨西哥,你應該複習你的西班牙文。

good-time charlie 漢語中“樂天派”可以用optimistic來表示,也可以用good-humored。但是上述表達法缺乏口語色彩,而用good-time Charlie比較合適。

jinx 通常指不吉利的人或物。其實“掃帚星”指的是“彗星”。在英語中沒有對應的比喻義的翻譯,不能譯為“comet”,應該是jinx。

你還嫩點兒。

Wet behind the ears如果直譯: 耳朵背後是潮的。它可能來自這樣的説法: 小馬、小牛剛生下來的時候全身濕漉漉的;別的地方很快會幹,但是耳朵背後卻還是濕的。所以説某人耳朵背後是潮的,是把這人比作剛生下不久的嬰兒了。換句話説就是他簡直像新生兒一般幼稚無知。

表達:

blow one’s cool:沉不住氣,控制不住

釋義:

習語中cool做名詞用,有“冷靜”和“鎮定”等意思。Blow one’s cool常用來形容人“沉不住氣”或“失去控制而激動起來”。

範例:

George blew his cool at theinsult.

喬治面對侮辱再也沈不住氣。

釋義:
