Few creations of big technology capture theimagination like giant dams. Perhaps it ishumankind's long suffering at the mercy of floodand drought that makes the ideal of forcing thewaters to do our bidding so fascinating.

So fascinating,強調的部分是humankind's long suffering at the mercy of flood and drought,其中心詞是suffering。 賓語是ideal, of forcing the waters to do our bidding作ideal的後置定語,so fascinating作賓語補足語。

capture the imagination of是一個固定搭配,意為“為… at the mercy of意為“任…

A sailor is at the mercy of the weather.

與bidding相關的短語有:at one’s bidding“依囑,遵命”;do one'sbidding“照…

Do as you are bidden.

He bade me hold my tongue.

The lesson from dams is that big is not alwaysbeautiful. It doesn't help that building a big, powerful dam has become a symbol ofachievement for nations and people striving toassert themselves.

在that從句中,主語是動名詞短語building a dam,而句末的分詞短語striving to assertthemselves作後置定語,修飾nations and people。

The most thrilling explanation is, unfortunately, alittle defective. Some economists argue thatpowerful structural changes in the world haveupended the old economic models that were basedupon the historical link between growth andinflation.

第一個句子的主幹為一個簡單的主系表結構anation is…a little defective。

To me the pageant of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streamsthrough my finger tips.( by Helen Keller)
