細説美國留學University以及College的差別

最近和朋友聊天，突然談到了university和college的差別,他過來3年多，眼瞅就畢業的人了，居然給我冒個college就是專科院校，我差點就暈菜。不過想想自己剛到美國的時候也曾有過同樣的誤會，後來經過好長時間才終於刷新了自己的觀念，就更別説消息更不靈通的國內朋友，看來是時候給大家掃掃盲了。

目前美大學最普及的排行榜：US NEWS，但是付費看，和買US NEWS書的朋友很少吧。如果買過，就能看到，書上有明確解釋：

National Universities: offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degrees; some emphasize research

Universities- Master's: provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s program

Comprehensive College: focus on undergraduate education and offer a range of degree programs-in the liberal arts, which account for fewer then half of their bachelor’s degrees, and in professional fields such as business, nursing, and education

Liberal Arts College: focus on undergraduate education and offer a range of degree programs-in the liberal arts(一字不差的摘錄)

上面那麼大段其實就是説，美國的大學大體分3種：University, University-Master's, College (Comprehensive, Liberal Arts College都算做college吧)。它們的`最大區別就是，University主要提供本科，研究生，博士，University-Master's主要提供本科，研究生，College主要提供本科。注意：主要這個詞，因為隨着這麼多年來，學校的不斷髮展擴建，在college提供master已是普遍現象，也有很多college提供博士學位的。除了這些，這3類學校沒太大差別，它們的排名可以説是並列的，也就是説第30的University，30的University-Master's和30的College在quality上基本持平，前幾的college在美國絕不壓於Havard, Yale，有興趣的話，可以自己去查資料，很多關於這方面的。

如果非要説college和university有差別，那大致就是物理條件的差別，通常college較小，學生少些，小班教學，十幾二十人，能很容易得到professor的personal attention和指導，也很容易認識朋友，因為就那麼些人，那麼小校園，抬頭不見低頭見，同時，college更專精於某個領域，在那領域上的造詣可能遠遠超過很多universities,象CUNY的Baruch,整個學校就是business學院，business非常之強，有窮人哈佛之稱;而university，動輒幾百畝，偌大個校園，教學樓之間往返都是半天，大教室，一個教室幾十上百來人非常平凡，professor不可能注意到每個人，要引起professor的注意，你必須得能在這一百多來號人裏stand out,但是university通常比較綜合，你可以從中學到很多你專業之外的東西，而且你如果在本校讀的本或研的話，升本校的博也有相當照顧，還有就是在university，你可能會接觸到研究的機會，不過在college，你也可以申請其他學校的研究機會。我是讀過college，也讀過university過來的，所以深有感觸，相信university-mater's就是這兩類學校的綜合吧。

寫這麼多的目的：

1，就是希望大家互相傳閲，不要再鬧這種低級笑話

2，給大家多些選擇，報under, master, doctor不一定就非得選university,很多college, university-master也是很不錯的選擇
