英語作文中the的用法

很多人在寫作文的時候都會遇到一個相同的問題：冠詞究竟應該怎麼用?實際上，冠詞的使用是一個很複雜的問題，很多時候僅憑語感來確定冠詞的用法並不靠譜，比如下面這幾個句子：

was the first American in the space?

books fill leisure time for many people.

history shows that the usual response to violent protest is repression.

lessness is a serious problem for the society.

上面這四個句子的冠詞使用全都是錯誤的(原因在下面有分析)，這些錯誤有時候很難憑語感來判斷。因此，我們需要系統地學習關於冠詞使用的語法知識。

從語法上講，冠詞是虛詞的一種，它只能搭配名詞使用，説明該名詞的意義。英語中的冠詞可以分為：定冠詞(the)，不定冠詞(a或者an)和零冠詞。對於冠詞使用，最核心的地方有兩點：

　　1.判斷和冠詞搭配使用的名詞是可數名詞還是不可數名詞

　　2.判斷冠詞在語境中是特指還是泛指

先説第一點，關於可數名詞和不可數名詞的判斷。漢語中並沒有可數名詞和不可數名詞的概念，這給我們判斷單詞是否可數帶來了很大困難。比如“傢俱”(furniture)，這個概念在漢語中是可數的，但在英語中它不可數。又比如“發展”(development)，按照漢語思維習慣，它應該是不可數名詞，但它實際上可以作為可數名詞使用(例如：There have been significant computer developments during the last decade.)

要判斷一個單詞是否可數不能靠直覺，只能多查詞典，參考詞典的解釋和例句。詞典查多了我們對常用詞的單複數判斷會越來越準確。

第二點是區分冠詞的特指和泛指。泛指是指一類事物，或某類事物的總稱。特指是指某類事物中的具體的某一個或某一些。舉個例子：

Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar.

句子開頭的 Pumas 泛指美洲獅這種動物，最後一句中 the puma 是特指，指代那隻從動物園逃遁的美洲獅。

　　對於冠詞的泛指，有四種表達形式：

1.不可數名詞不加冠詞表示泛指

2.複數名詞不加冠詞表示泛指

3.單數名詞加定冠詞 the 可以表示泛指

4.不定冠詞 a/an 加單數名詞可以表示泛指

下面解釋一下這幾點：

　　1.不可數名詞不加冠詞表示泛指

不可數名詞在表示泛指時，前面不加定冠詞 the，如果加 the，則表示特指。比如：

Salt is a strong-tasting substance, in the form of white powder or crystals.

此時 salt 是泛指，指代“鹽”這一類物品。

Can you pass the salt please?

上面這句話的意思是“請把鹽遞過來好嗎?”，這裏 salt 是特指，指説話人和聽話人都知道的那一袋“鹽”。

文章開頭的幾個句子：

was the first American in the space?

history shows that the usual response to violent protest is repression.

lessness is a serious problem for the society.

第一個句子錯誤的原因在於，space 表示“太空”時是不可數名詞，不可數名詞加定冠詞 the 就變成了特指，這與句子要表達的意思不相符。原句要強調的是一個泛指的“太空”，因此 space 不能加 the，即要寫成：

Who was the first American in space?

第二個句子中 history 是一個不可數名詞，而原句要表達的“歷史”是一個泛指概念，因此 the 也要去掉，即：

History shows that the usual response to violent protest is repression.

第三個句子也是同樣的道理，當表示廣義上的“社會”時，society 是不可數名詞，單詞前面的 the 要去掉(如果 the 不去掉就變成了特指，這與句子的語境不符)：

Homelessness is a serious problem for society.

　　2.複數名詞不加冠詞表示泛指

複數名詞在表示泛指時前面不能加定冠詞 the，如果加了 the，就表示特指，比如：

(1)Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America.

(2)The pumas escaped from the zoo.

第一個句子中的 pumas 是泛指，指美洲獅這種動物，第二個句子中 pumas 是特指，指一羣逃離動物園的'美洲獅。對於上面提到的句子：

The books fill leisure time for many people.

句子要表達的意思是“圖書能夠幫很多人打發空閒時間”，此時“圖書”應該是泛指概念，但句子中 the books 只能表示特指，因此與語境不符。句子應該改成：

Books fill leisure time for many people.
