奧林匹克精神頌揚理解、合作和友誼,它提倡在平等條件下的`公平競爭。在學生中舉辦類似於奧林匹克的運動會有助於培養學生們的公平競爭精神。

6'20''Pre-reading questions:

Were British students doing enough sports last year? Wha tis the importance of holding Olympic-style games in schools?

The British Government is planning to create annual1 Olympic-style games in schools. They want to make the games as a drive to bring competitive sport back to the playground.

Last year it was reported that only 36 percent of secondary schools took part in inter-school sports competitions, and almost 700,000 pupils were getting lethan two hours of sport at school per week.

A report shows that lethan a third of school pupils take part in regular competitive sport in schools, and fewer than one in five take part in regular competition between schools. So competitive sport in schools needs to be revived2.

It is hoped that competitive sport in schools will use the power of hosting the Olympic Games to encourage young people —whatever their age or ability —to take part in this new competition.

Jeremy Hunt, the government culture minister, said, "Sport—whether you win or lose—teaches young people great lessons for life. It encourages teamwork ,dedication3 and striving to be the best."

There is a national competition for children of outstanding abilities, but the government’s plan is to include a much greater number of pupils, and to see teams from different schools competing against each other.
