伯牙對鍾子期的話

俞伯牙吃了一驚，手下用力，“啪”的一聲，琴絃被撥斷了一根。俞伯牙正在猜測岸邊的人為何而來，就聽到那個人大聲地對他説：“先生，您不要疑心，我是個打柴的，回家晚了，走到這裏聽到您在彈琴，覺得琴聲絕妙，不由得站在這裏聽了起來。”

俞伯牙藉着月光仔細一看，那個人身旁放着一擔乾柴，果然是個打柴的人。俞伯牙心想：一個打柴的樵夫，怎麼會聽懂我的琴呢?於是他就問：“你既然懂得琴聲，那就請你説説看，我彈的是一首什麼曲子?”

聽了俞伯牙的問話，那打柴的人笑着回答：“先生，您剛才彈的是孔子讚歎弟-子顏回的曲譜，只可惜，您彈到第四句的時候，琴絃斷了。”

打柴人的回答一點不錯，俞伯牙不禁大喜，忙邀請他上船來細談。那打柴人看到俞伯牙彈的琴，便説：“這是瑤琴，!相傳是伏羲氏造的。”接着他又把這瑤琴的來歷説了出來。聽了打柴人的這番講述，俞伯牙心中不由得暗暗佩服。接着俞伯牙又為打柴人彈了幾曲，請他辨識其中之意。當他彈奏的琴聲雄壯高亢的時候，打柴人説：“這琴聲，表達了高山的雄偉氣勢。”當琴聲變得清新流暢時，打柴人説：“這後彈的琴聲，表達的是無盡的流水。”

俞伯牙聽了不禁驚喜萬分，自己用琴聲表達的心意，過去沒人能聽得懂，而眼前的這個樵夫，竟然聽得明明白白。沒想到，在這野嶺之下，竟遇到自己久久尋覓不到的知音，於是他問明打柴人名叫鍾子期，和他喝起酒來。倆人越談越投機，相見恨晚，結拜為兄弟。約定來年的中秋再到這裏相會。

和鍾子期灑淚而別後第二年中秋，俞伯牙如約來到了漢陽江口，可是他等啊等啊，怎麼也不見鍾子期來赴約，於是他便彈起琴來召喚這位知音，可是又過了好久，還是不見人來。第二天，俞伯牙向一位老人打聽鍾子期的下落，老人告訴他，鍾子期已不幸染病去世了。臨終前，他留下遺言，要把墳墓修在江邊，到八月十五相會時，好聽俞伯牙的琴聲。

聽了老人的話，俞伯牙萬分悲痛，他來到鍾子期的墳前，悽楚地彈起了古曲《高山流水》。彈罷，他挑斷了琴絃，長歎了一聲，把心愛的瑤琴在青石上摔了個粉碎。他悲傷地説：我唯一的知音已不在人世了，這琴還彈給誰聽呢?”兩位“知音”的友誼感動了後人，人們在他們相遇的地方，築起了一座古琴台。直至今天，人們還常用“知音”來形容朋友之間的情誼。
