紫禁城(the Forbidden City)坐落於北京市中心,又稱故宮,是明清時期的皇宮。這座矩形宮殿是世界上最大的宮殿羣。四周環繞着六米深的護城河(moat)和十米高的城牆。四面各有一門。護城牆四角各有一個精心建造的獨特角樓。紫禁城被分成兩部分:南面的部分即外朝(Outer Court),是皇帝行使最髙權力的地方;而北面的部分即內廷(Inner Court),是皇帝和皇室成員生活的地方。今天,紫禁城敞開大門,迎接國內外遊客。
