Pat: What’s the matter, Ted?

Ted: I slipped and fell downstairs.

Ted: Yes, I have. I think that I’ve hurt my back.

1 fell downstairs，從樓梯上摔下來。

downstairs是副詞，修飾fell，作狀語。

2 Try and stand up.試着站起來。在英語中，常用and把兩個動詞連接在一起，如第13課的come upstairs and see it.這種句子往往用來鼓勵某種動作。

3 Here在這裏是感歎詞，意思是“來”或“喂”，引起別人注意。

4 Let me help you.讓我來幫你。其中let有“允許”的意思。注意在let後面要加不帶to的動詞不定式。

5 The doctor says that he will come at once.

在英文中如果要把某人所説的話告訴另一個人，要用間接引語。間接引語不用引號。往往在引語前加that等引導詞。

這一短語還可表示“起牀”。

afraid that,想，恐怕;be sure that, 想，認為。

這兩個結構後面通常接從句，在口語中有時that可省略。

　　語法 Grammar in use

1.賓語從句(1)

賓語從句在句中作賓語，一般用that引導，但在口語中經常省略掉 that.

可用在 say, think, believe, hope, know, understand, suppose 等動詞之後：

She says that she is cold.

她説她冷。

He thinks that he needs an X-ray.

他認為他需要拍個X片。

I know that I can repair this car.

我知道我能修理這部車。

They believe that they will have more money.

他們認為他們會有更多的錢。

可用在某些描寫感情的形容詞之後，如 afraid, sure, sorry,glad等：

I am sure that you need an X-ray.

我覺得你需要拍個X片。

I am sorry that you are ill.

聽到你生病了我很難過。

2.間接引述時的時態

如果間接引語中的引述動詞是現在時，那麼其後的時態通常與原來口頭陳述句的時態相同。轉述剛剛説完的話時通常皆如此。

He devoted his life to helping the disabled.

(2)對……有幫助;對……有好處：

My knowledge of French helped me a lot while I was travelling in France.

我在法國旅行時，我的法文知識幫了我大忙。
