Singapore may hold the dubious title of “most expensive city in the world,” but it remains the most popular place for expats to live and work, according to an annual survey of expats released by HSBC.

Expats praised the city-state for its appealing salaries, career development opportunities and quality of life. And despite the eye-watering cost of living day-to-day in Singapore (including transport costs three-times that of New York), more than a quarter of its expats who responded to the 2015 Expat Explorer survey said they earned more than $200,000 per annum (compared to just 13% of expats globally).

A salary increase or chance to get ahead in a career are often the big incentives to move abroad, but an increasing number of expats are travelling to new countries for personal rather than financial reasons, the HSBC study found. Three in five of the people surveyed said they had not experienced an immediate increase in their pay, but more than half, 53%, said their quality of life had improved after moving.

Destinations where expats were most likely to have relocated in order to improve wellbeing were New Zealand, Spain and Portugal, while Sweden was the most appealing for expats with families, thanks to ample childcare options and the relative ease of organising schools.

A total of 21,950 people from 39 countries responded to HSBC’s 2015 survey. The bank asked them to share their views on everything from career and financial wellbeing to quality of life. New Zealand, Sweden, Bahrain and Germany rounded out the top five overall expat destinations, while Egypt, Italy and Brazil were at the bottom of the pack.

The best benefit packages still come from a placement in the Middle East. Some 80% of expats surveyed in Oman received airfare allowances for trips home, and in Qatar 75% received an accommodation allowance. The global average for both measures was 33%.

Contractual benefits in locations outside the Middle East were less common. Just over half of global expats (52%) received health and medical allowances and over a fifth (21%) were given a relocation allowance.

Mooncakes are traditional snacks/desserts of Mid-Autumn Festival, the second most important festival in China. It is said that there is a moon goddess who makes these cakes, so people call them mooncakes.

People often give mooncakes as gifts when visiting friends and family around Mid-Autumn. There are many flavors of mooncakes on the market. So how do you choose?

Here we introduce the top 10 flavors of mooncakes that you should consider trying to help you choose.

Kernel and Roast Pork

Five kernel and roast pork mooncakes are the most traditional classic flavor. Compared to other common flavors, five kernel and roast pork mooncakes are much more expensive. They are filled with mixed nuts and seeds (almonds, walnuts, and dried winter melon, sesame, and pumpkin seeds) and roast pork. You will get a different taste with each bite. Most Chinese, especially seniors, love this flavor.

Bean Paste

Red bean paste (紅豆沙 hongdousha /hong-doh-shaa/) mooncakes are filled with a rich, thick, red bean paste, and taste sweet and smooth. The red bean paste gives a lingering flavor, and the scent fills your mouth after each bite.

s Seed Paste

Lotus seed paste mooncakes are a famous Mid-Autumn Festival dessert of Cantonese origin, which have become popular all over China and even overseas.

Due to the high price of lotus paste, white kidney bean paste is sometimes used as filler, sometimes with duck eggs, so make sure you don't go too cheap and get a real lotus paste mooncake.

4. Snow Skin

Snow skin mooncakes are non-baked mooncakes, which originated in Hong Kong, and have become fashionable in China. The crust is made of frozen glutinous rice, and looks snow white. Now some people add juice to the crust to make it look more colorful. The fillings can be sweet or savory, or both, such as fruit and duck egg yolks.

5. Vegetable and Fruit

Fruit and vegetable mooncakes are filled with fresh vegetables and fruits, and taste soft and smooth. Fillings including honeydew, litchi.

6. Chocolate

Chocolate mooncakes make Mid-Autumn Festival more romantic. The attractive mooncake appearance and the thick scent of chocolate mix traditional Chinese culture and Western romantic culture together. The crust is made from chocolate and the filling can be oats, berries, Oreo flavor, etc.

7. Green Tea

Both tea and mooncakes are among the most traditional of Chinese foods, and together they create a new mooncake variety: green tea mooncakes. They are mainly filled with tea leaves and other ingredients, like lotus paste. With the taste of fresh tea leaves, the usually greasy taste of mooncake is well balanced.

8. Ice Cream

Ice cream mooncake is a new look for traditional Chinese mooncakes. Cooling instead of warming, the refreshing taste makes it popular among young people.

9. Cream Cheese

The main feature of cream cheese mooncakes is the golden and crispy crust with a thick milky flavor. It is not as sweet as other mooncakes.

10. Seafood

Seafood mooncakes are more expensive than other types of traditional mooncakes. As their name suggests, they are filled with seafood like abalone and seaweed. They taste fresh and salty. If you don’t like sweet mooncakes, and like seafood, seafood mooncake is a good idea.

A teen couple in Claremont, California recently survived a lightning strike, thanks to their public display of affection.

Couple Dylan and Lexie were holding hands and walking down a tree-lined street recently when a thunderstorm hit, and the two were hit by a lightning bolt.

'It felt like I was getting hit over the head with metal or something,' said Dylan.

'Next thing you know, we're on the ground and we gave each other the most terrified looks,' Lexie added. 'I kind of thought there was an earthquake.'

A passerby then came over to help them up and said that they had been hit directly.

Amazingly, the couple came away unscathed, though a little shaken.

The couple asked a friend's mom, who is a nurse, if they needed to go the hospital, and were told it was unnecessary.

However, they did go see a doctor just to get an explanation for what happened.

Dr Stefan Reynoso says that their hand-holding helped 'diffuse the electrical current' which entered through Dylan's head and then exited through Lexie's foot.

The chances of getting struct by lightning are about 1 in 700,000 in the United States.

SBU(Stony Brook University)

(Wollongong University)

(Sapporo agricultural school)

(The Pennsylvania State University)

by the way,學校還是很好噠!

(International Christian University)

(Texas A&M University)

(Rhode Island School of Design)

(Purdue University)

(University of North Carolina Chapel Hill)

(University of Notre Dame)

(University of Western Ontario)

(University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

(Lovely Professional University)

Matthew Youlden speaks nine languages fluently and understands more than a dozen more. In fact, for the longest time I didn’t even know he was British. When I told Matthew how I’ve been struggling to merely pick up a second language, he had the following advice for me. If you believe that you can never become bilingual, take note!

1. KNOW WHY YOU’RE DOING IT

This might sound obvious, but if you don’t have a good reason to learn a language, you are less likely to stay motivated over the long-run. Wanting to impress English-speakers with your French is not a very good reason; wanting to get to know a French person in his or her own language is another matter entirely.

2. DIVE IN2.

“I tend to want to absorb as much as possible right from the start. So if I learn something I really, really go for it and try to use it throughout the day. For me it’s about actually putting what you’re learning into practice – be that writing an email, speaking to yourself, listening to music, listening to the radio. Surrounding yourself, submerging yourself in the new language culture is extremely important.”

“I always have at the back of my mind that it’s adapting your way of thinking to the way of thinking in that language.”

3. FIND A PARTNER

Matthew learned several languages together with his twin brother Michael (they tackled their first foreign language, Greek, when they were only eight years old!). Matthew and Michael, or the Super Polyglot Bros. as I’d like to now refer to them, gained their superpowers from good-ol’, healthy sibling rivalry:“You have someone with whom you can speak, and that’s the idea behind learning a language.”

4. KEEP IT RELEVANT

If you make conversation a goal from the beginning, you are less likely to get lost in textbooks.:“You’re learning a language to be able to use it. The creative side is really being able to put the language that you’re learning into a more useful, general, everyday setting – be that through writing songs, generally wanting to speak to people. You don’t necessarily have to go abroad; you can go to the Greek restaurant down the road and order in Greek.”

5. HAVE FUN WITH IT

Using your new language in any way is a creative act. The Super Polyglot Bros. practiced their Greek by writing and recording songs. Think of some fun ways to practice your new language: make a radio play with a friend, draw a comic strip, write a poem, or simply talk to whomever you can. If you can’t find a way to have fun with the new language, chances are you aren’t following step four.

6. ACT LIKE A CHILD

The key to learning as quickly as a child may be to simply take on certain childlike attitudes: for instance, lack of self-consciousness, a desire to play in the language and willingness to make mistakes. New research cannot find a direct link between age and the ability to learn. As kids, we are expected to make mistakes, but as adults mistakes become taboo. When it comes to learning a language, admitting that you don’t know everything (and being okay with that) is the key to growth and freedom. Let go of your grown-up inhibitions!

7. LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Willingness to make mistakes means being ready to put yourself in potentially embarrassing situations: talk to strangers in the language, ask for directions, order food, try to tell a joke. The more often you do this, the bigger your comfort zone becomes and the more at ease you can be in new situations:

“At the beginning you’re going to encounter difficulties: maybe the pronunciation, maybe the grammar, the syntax, or you don’t really get the sayings. But I think the most important thing is to always develop this feel. Every native speaker has a feel for his or her own language, and that’s basically what makes a native-speaker – whether you can make the language your own.”

8. LISTEN

You must learn to look before you can draw:“We’re able to pronounce anything, it’s just we’re not used to doing it. For example the rolled r doesn’t exist in my form of English. When I was learning Spanish there were words with the hard r in them like perro and reunión. For me, the best way to go about mastering that is actually to hear it constantly, to listen to it and to kind of visualize or imagine how that is supposed to be pronounced, because for every sound there is a specific part of the mouth or throat that we use in order to achieve that sound.”

If you can’t watch and imitate a native-speaker in person, watching foreign-language films and TV is a good substitute.

9. TALK TO YOURSELF

“It might sound really weird, but actually speaking to yourself in a language is a great way to practice if you’re not able to use it all the time.” This can keep new words and phrases fresh in your mind and build up your confidence for the next time you speak with someone.“

10. RELAX!

You are not going to annoy people by speaking their language poorly. If you preface any interaction with, “I’m learning and I’d like to practice…” most people will be patient, encouraging and happy to oblige.

BUT WHAT’S THE POINT?

We’ve gone into HOW to start learning a language, but are you still on the fence about WHY to learn? Matthew has one last point to make:

“I think each language has a certain way of seeing the world. If you speak one language then you have a different way of analyzing and interpreting the world than the speaker of another language does. Even if they’re really closely-related languages such as Spanish and Portuguese, which are to a certain extent mutually intelligible, they are at the same time two different worlds – two different mindsets. “

“Therefore, having learned other languages and been surrounded by other languages, I couldn’t possibly choose only one language because it would mean really renouncing the possibility to be able to see the world in a different way. Not in one way, but in many different ways. So the monolingual lifestyle, for me, is the saddest, the loneliest, the most boring way of seeing the world. There are so many advantages of learning a language; I really can’t think of any reason not to.”

Lego has been voted the greatest toy of all time, with iconic favourites Monopoly, Action Man and Scalextric following just behind.

For the first time ever, the bosses of Britain's biggest toy companies have joined forces to cast their votes on the games which they think have shaped the industry and childhoods over the last 50 years.

Toy experts from 100 companies up and down the country took part in the study, which is the first of its kind to ask the opinions of leading firms instead of consumers.

All of the executives were asked to reveal their top three toys of all time, with the only condition being that they weren't allowed to vote for their own toys.

Lego was crowned the greatest toy of all time, with all but a few voters putting it in the number one spot.

Iconic board game Monopoly came second, with Action Man in third, racing car game Scalextric in fourth and football toy Subbuteo in fifth.

The rest of the top 10 was rounded off with Rubik's Cube, Star Wars toys, Barbie, Matchbox Cars and playing cards.

However, popular toys absent from the top 50 list included games such as Etcha A Sketch, Dungeons and Dragons, Pokémon cards and Cluedo.

The top 50 also included a few surprises such as Cards Against Humanity, a risqué party game involving playing cards which launched in 2011 after it was successfully funded on Kickstarter.

ToyNews, a leading toy industry website, said the survey serves as a celebration of the greatest toys the industry has produced over the last 50 years.

Billy Langsworthy, deputy editor of ToyNews, said: 'A lot of the top toy lists that are about come from surveys of consumers but very rarely does anyone ask the industry experts what they think.

'I'm not aware of any other survey like this one - we got executives from almost 100 of the leading toy companies to participate.

'We wanted to know about personal favourites and also about toys they thought were the most commercially successful, and whether they matched with what consumers say.

'Each executive was asked to pick their top three toys they felt were the greatest of all time then submit them to us.

'A lot of the entries in the top 50 were expected but there were a few surprises - playing cards, although not a brand, featured high up on the list as did roller skates.

'And there were other big names that didn't make the cut – Etcha A Sketch, Beanie Babies and Pokémon for example.

'The top vote was Lego by a country mile - almost every single person had Lego as their number one toy.

'We wanted it to be a celebration of all the great toys that have been created by toy companies, and that's just what it is.'
